Makerere University Innovation Pod Empowers Young Ugandan to Develop ‘Maisha’ — A Life-Saving Herbal Malaria Syrup

Malaria continues to claim thousands of lives in Uganda each year, but a remarkable young innovator is determined to change that narrative. Joel Felix Ochom, a third-year pharmacy student at Makerere University, drew inspiration from his childhood experience when he survived malaria using a local herb. With guidance and support from the Makerere University Innovation Pod (Mak-UniPod), Joel has transformed that indigenous remedy into Maisha — a scientifically refined, patented herbal syrup that offers new hope in the fight against malaria.

Maisha represents more than just medical innovation; it is a powerful story of resilience, indigenous knowledge, and youth-driven ingenuity shaping the future of healthcare in Africa. Through Mak-UniPod’s mentorship and incubation, Joel’s journey demonstrates how empowering local innovators can lead to global impact.
