Makerere University Innovation Pod (Unipod), in partnership with UNLEASH and UNDP Uganda, is calling on Makerere University students to join the Makerere University Renewable Energy Hackathon 2025, under the theme “Innovation for a clean energy future: Youth driving Uganda’s renewable energy transition”.
This upcoming program invites students to bring their creativity and ideas to the table – to help shape a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Uganda. It’s more than just a hackathon; This is an opportunity to tackle real energy challenges and empower young innovators who will lead the country’s renewable energy movement.
What is Unleashed Hacks?
Unleash Hacks are local innovation sprints that connect youth, experts and communities to create practical solutions in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The 2025 Makerere edition focuses on clean and renewable energy, challenging participants to design, prototype and present innovative ideas that can help accelerate Uganda’s transition towards sustainable energy systems such as solar, biogas, wind, e-mobility, waste-to-energy and digital energy management.
What does the hackathon aim to achieve?
This hackathon is designed to:
Empower students and young innovators with the tools and guidance needed to develop market-ready clean energy solutions.
Encourage collaboration between university students, startups and energy sector experts.
Makerere University’s UniPod incorporates excellent ideas, developing them into impactful and scalable innovations.
Promoting entrepreneurship and innovation in Uganda’s renewable energy landscape.
